13 May 2003

Minutes

The meeting was convened at a private home, subsequent to notification of interested individuals. Present were Board Secretary Steven Macdonald and Treasurer Nan Hammett. The agenda is attached as the last page of these minutes.

Review and adoption of minutes from prior meeting (4/08/03)

The minutes were adopted.

Treasurer's report

Treasurer Hammett presented an itemized report dated 5/13/2003, showing expenditures to date of $27,260.29.

The Board reviewed and approved the draft Work Progress Report, covering the period 4/1/03 to 4/30/03.

Technical consulting services

Contractor progress was discussed separately for each contractor.

IERE. The Board continues to be generally satisfied with the progress made by IERE on the three contracted tasks: R5 (technical consulting on environmental labs, completed Oct. 2002), R6* (technical consulting on sources of soil, soil amendments), and D1 (webpage). Secretary Macdonald was asked to communicate regarding written work-product for clean soil vendors.

Earthworks Environmental. IRPPC has contracted with technical consultant Earthworks on four tasks: R1-4 (independent review, non-technical summary and critique), D3 (periodic column for island newspapers), D4 (framework for surveys), and D7 (production of focus/summary sheets and Event Surveys).

Earthworks was asked to conduct review and summary of the Ecy child use areas study, and they sent the Board two separate documents: a series of comments, and a draft summary. The Board continues to be undecided whether we prefer a single consolidated document, rather than a critique separate from the summary. Potential work-products include: brief newspaper article, technical fact sheet, technical critical summary for webpage.

The Earthworks news article entitled "Vashon-grown Produce: Am I at risk?" was submitted by the Secretary to the newspaper editors on 12 April; it was published in The Ticket on 17 April [and in the Beachcomber on 21 May]. The article is available online via the IRPPC-supported IERE webpage <http://www.iere.org/vashon-metals.html>, and directly at <http://www.iere.org/documents/FoodCropSummary.pdf>.

The Earthworks news article entitled "Phytoremediation on Vashon-Maury Island?", reporting on the IERE study of uptake of heavy metals into island wild plants, was approved by Ecy and submitted by the Secretary to the newspaper editors on 22 April. [It was also published in the Beachcomber on 21 May]. Earthworks wrote a longer summary for posting on the webpage, which was likewise reviewed and approved by Ecy, and is now available online at <http://www.iere.org/documents/phyto-wild_plants.pdf>.

The Earthworks work-products from the evaluation of the April symposium were reviewed. Secretary Macdonald was asked to communicate regarding statistical analysis.

VMICC HMRC meeting 5/2/03

The proposal by the Committee to have various information sheets printed was reviewed.

A plan was made for telephone consultation shortly before Committee June meeting.
