Minutes

The meeting was convened at the Vashon Chamber office. Present were Board President James English, Secretary Steven Macdonald, and Treasurer Nan Hammett. The agenda is attached as the last page of these minutes.

Review and adoption of minutes from prior meeting (5/13/2003)

The minutes were adopted.

Treasurer's report

Treasurer Hammett presented an itemized report dated 6/10/2003, showing expenditures to date of $31,137.91.

The Board reviewed and approved the draft Work Progress Report, covering the period 5/1/03 to 5/31/03, with the understanding that any further information received from the contractors could be submitted subsequently to Ecology.

Technical consulting services

Contractor progress was discussed separately for each contractor.

IERE. Soil vendors (R6) The document "Potential Soil Sources.doc" was positively reviewed. The Board decided to refer it to Earthworks, requesting writing of a news article and a web-summary based on the information. IERE will be asked to assist.

Soil Amendments project (R6*) The documents "Heavy Metals in the Garden.doc" and "Garden Brochure.doc" were favorably reviewed. Secretary Macdonald was asked to forward to Ecology for review and approval for duplication.

Webpage (D1) The document "May2003-HeavyMetalPages-LogFileReport.pdf" was discussed.

Earthworks Environmental. Independent review, non-technical summary and critique (R1-4) The documents "Vashon Child Use Study Summary 040503.doc" and "Child use comments.doc" were discussed. The potential work-products of brief newspaper article, technical fact sheet, and technical critical summary for webpage were approved. Secretary Macdonald was asked to contact Kathy Lester for further discussion.

Periodic column for island newspapers (D3) The Earthworks news articles entitled "Vashon-grown Produce: Am I at risk?" and "Phytoremediation on Vashon-Maury Island?" were published in the Beachcomber on 21 May. Potential new article writing tasks were discussed: soil sources (with assistance from IERE); soil amendments (with assistance from IERE), timed to match availability of brochures; and, April symposium, timed to match availability of the videotape, and also to discuss the evaluation results. Secretary Macdonald was asked to contact Kathy Lester for further discussion.

Production of focus/summary sheets and Event Surveys (D7) The document "FinalVashonSurveyResults-2003.xls" was discussed. Secretary Macdonald was asked to contact Kathy Lester to request stratified analysis, based on length of residence on Vashon.

VMICC HMRC meeting 6/06/03

The proposal by the Committee to have various information sheets printed was reviewed, based on the document "Info sheets in progress V2.rtf", along with an email message from Kathy Seel dated 6/10/03. Ecology is concerned about whether two documents developed by IERE for VMICC-HMRC duplicate information in two recently released Ecy reports: "DIRT ALERT Arsenic and Lead in Soils" and "CHILD USE AREA Draft Arsenic and Lead Soil Sampling Guidance". Secretary Macdonald was asked to contact Ms Seel for clarification.

Ecology PPG 03-05 grant

Secretary Macdonald was asked to contact Kathy Seel for an update.
