Minutes of Meeting 10/13/00:
The Ad-hoc Committee on the Lead-Arsenic Issue met Friday, October 13 at 10:00 am at the Crossroads Restaurant to discuss matters relating to the public participation grant.
At the meeting, it was agreed that the grant could best be obtained through an independent 501c3 and that we should move ahead to form one. It was also agreed that the new organization should cover more than this issue, and that it should be an independent source of information (a conduit or resource center) not an activist type of organization.
The concept of sustainability was floated as an organizing principle. Sustainability has three components: social, economic and environmental sustainability. Sustainability is the meeting of life needs today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. There was some concern that we might lose focus on the Arsenic issue, and that an environment-only organization would not be generally desired by the Vashon-Maury community.
Jim will be bringing forward the concept to the Community Council, requesting their concurrence in the formation of this organization. No agreement was reached on a name for this organization. Vashon-Maury Sustainability, Vashon-Maury Resource Center, Vashon-Maury Sustainable Services, and other names were suggested. A short list of potential names will be presented to the Community Council.
We will also ask them for the $500 501c3 filing fee. At the Next Community Council meeting we will also be passing around a clipboard for signups on the issue. The signup should include name, phone, email, when available for meetings (day or evening), and specific requests for financial/treasurer volunteers.
Rita agreed to fill in incorporation papers, and will make modification tot he proposal based on our conversations. She needs bios to append to the proposal. Rita was also tasked with talking with Kathy Seel about the issue of matching funds, and letters of support. (That conversation has already taken place, and the answer is that we don't need matching funds, and that formal letters are also not needed). Rita will also talk with Caron to include the Seattle-King County DoH stuff in the proposal.
Steve agreed to ferry papers to Olympia as needed. He will also follow up with the Garden Club.
We set a tentative meeting date for the 23rd in the evening. Jim will secure a room.
