The planned meeting with Ecology was postponed. Ecology would like to meet with us in September, with a "pre-meeting" with Jake Jacobovitch and Jim English
ALRC rejected the idea of a pre-meeting, and Jim will be requesting a meeting with Mr. Pendowski on August 8,9, or 10. Mr. Alexander will be invited to attend but his attendance is not necessary from our point of view. The primary goal of the meeting is to discuss the issues of better communication between Ecology and the Island. Jim will be requesting the draft Statement of Work between Ecology and King County prior to the meeting, and the agenda will include the correlation between the Statement of Work and ALRC's documents identifying the needs of the Islanders.
Today we are submitting a letter to Ecology formally requesting the agency provide photocopies of the agency's worksheets used to calculate the interim action levels.
A description about how to sample for heavy metals in soils was written and is available at the iere website, http://www.iere.org/Vashon/sampling.html. The document was forwarded to King County, and no response was forthcoming from them.
The Ag survey is in process. Some agricultural interests have not received it yet, while others have not returned it yet.
The upcoming UW symposia on community-based research may be of interest to ALRC. Nan will review the documentation and report back to us on it.
ALRC future plans include:
- Being more visible and active in the community through newspaper columns and website.
- Investigating soil testing
- Investigating labs
IRPPC only has about $10,000 in the budget for technical support. They are beginning the process for RFP and contracting for help.
May Gerstle was unanimously elected vice-chair of the committee
Our next meeting is set for September 7 at 11:30 in the Library
