Draft Minutes Heavy Metal Remediation Committee

5 April Meeting

Present at the meeting were JW Turner, May Gerstle, Rita Schenck, Steve Macdonald, Dyian Oldenberg, Shaheeda Pierce and Shannon Rourke, from the public and Bonnie Meyer from Public Health Seattle King County

The minutes were accepted with modifications.

The agenda was accepted with modification

Steve reported on IRPPC. They have selected Kleinfelter and IERE as their contractors, pending approval of contracts. Kleinfelter will perform a review of existing documents and support a survey, while IERE will provide the website and evaluate laboratories and soil data.

Progress on CCA Lumber discussions was delayed due to the unavailability of Lisa Elliott and Lee Miller for this meeting.

The PI did a story on the high lead and arsenic on the mainland, and highlighted the delay between obtaining the data and releasing it (at least 9 months according to Bonnie). Evidently the delay was caused by Ecology's reliance on a single consultant, and directing his efforts towards other issues rather than producing this report. .Bonnie stated that Rita's request for data stimulated Ecology to get the report out. Rita noted that the raw data is available on the IERE website now.

There was some discussion about requesting that Ecology cease its reliance on a single consultant since this would speed up the process between data collection and release to the public. May will draft this letter.

Rita reported out that no progress has been made on the Phytoremediation project. Also, that although Jim Ruttenber has expressed some interest in supporting HMRC, he has not specifically committed to work with us. She will contact him directly to see if he will review a document describing the symptoms of multiple heavy metal exposure, to be developed by the Science committee.

May reported on her meeting with Waynon Johnson. He suggested that we might be able to get some funding from ATSDR, and should do outreach to Wendy Church of Citizens for a Healthy Bay and NOAA.

We also need an attorney on the committee. May will ask Bill Tobin.

Meeting adjourned at 5 pm.

Our next meeting will be on May 10th in the Library at 3:30 PM

Respectfully submitted by Rita Schenck.
